First AI Workshops in Yaoundé: ACTLAB’s Workshops Continue in Cameroon
Artificial intelligence is already changing how we learn, work, find information and make decisions. Yet many people, especially young people, women and communities far from the big cities, still have few chances to understand what AI is, how it works and how it can affect their lives. Without this understanding, there is a real risk that AI will deepen inequalities instead of reducing them.
That is why Action Lab for Development (ACTLAB) is running AI workshops in Cameroon. We believe that everyone should be able to understand AI, use it responsibly and have a say in how it is developed and governed. These workshops create spaces for learning and dialogue, where participants discover AI tools, reflect on their risks and benefits, and share their own perspectives.
It all started in Nkambe
The workshop series began on Saturday, 3 October 2026 in Nkambe, Donga-Mantung Division, in the North-West Region, through the ACTLAB × BINDECA Yellow Digital Centre collaboration. This first workshop showed how important it is to bring AI knowledge beyond the big cities. Local digital centres like the BINDECA Yellow Digital Centre bring technology and learning opportunities closer to communities that are often left out of conversations about the digital future.
First workshops in Yaoundé
After Nkambe, the workshops moved to the capital. On Saturday, 10 October 2026, we launched our first workshops in Yaoundé, at My Popeyes Pastry Building, near Nlongkak Roundabout, at the entrance to Bastos. A second workshop followed on Saturday, 17 October 2026, at an academic institution in Yaoundé.
The workshops were coordinated by Christophe Ledoux Chimi, UN Online Volunteer and project coordinator in Yaoundé, together with a team of volunteer facilitators. Together, they welcomed participants to learn about artificial intelligence, reflect on its risks and benefits, and discuss how to use it in a responsible and ethical way.
These first workshops are an important milestone. After a first experience in the North-West, the project now reaches the capital, where the national consultation will also take place.
MoralityCode AI: ethics at the heart of ACTLAB’s agenda
These workshops are part of ACTLAB’s wider commitment to ethical and responsible AI. In December 2025, ACTLAB launched MoralityCode AI, an app that explores how artificial intelligence can be guided by human values, ethics and compassion. It encourages users to pause, reflect and critically assess AI-generated answers before acting on them. MoralityCode AI reflects the idea behind our whole AI agenda: technology should serve people, respect human dignity and leave no one behind.
A community-driven project
These workshops are part of ACTLAB’s AI Literacy, Community Voice and Responsible AI Governance Initiative, which runs in Bamenda, Douala and Yaoundé. The project is supported through NIYEL‘s IDIA programme (Cohort 2), with support from the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), Canada, and UK International Development.
Our goal is simple: AI should not be something that happens to communities, but something they understand, question and help shape.
What’s next
The workshop series continues with a workshop at Yaoundé V City Hall on Saturday, 24 October 2026, in partnership with the City Council. The project will end with a national consultation in Yaoundé, bringing together participants from all three cities.
