From Nkambe to Yaoundé: ACTLAB’s AI Workshops Reach Communities Across Cameroon
Artificial intelligence is changing how people learn, work, find information and take part in public life. But many communities still have few chances to learn what AI is, how it works and how it affects their lives. Action Lab for Development (ACTLAB) wants to change that, one community at a time.
This month, ACTLAB’s AI workshops in Cameroon are moving from the North-West Region to the capital, Yaoundé. Here is what has happened so far and what comes next.
Nkambe: an AI workshop at the BINDECA Yellow Digital Centre
On Saturday, 3 October 2026, ACTLAB held an AI workshop in Nkambe, Donga-Mantung Division, in Cameroon’s North-West Region. The workshop was made possible through the ACTLAB × BINDECA Yellow Digital Centre collaboration.
Participants explored what artificial intelligence is, how it is already part of everyday life, and how to use it in a responsible and ethical way. Local digital centres like this one play an important role: they bring technology and learning opportunities closer to communities that are often left out of conversations about the digital future.
We are grateful to the BINDECA Yellow Digital Centre for hosting the workshop and to every participant who joined us.
Next stop: Yaoundé
From Nkambe, the workshops continue in Yaoundé. They are coordinated by Christophe Ledoux Chimi, a former UN Online Volunteer with ACTLAB who now coordinates the project in Yaoundé. Christophe leads a group of volunteer facilitators who will run a series of workshops across the city throughout October:
- Saturday, 10 October 2026: next workshop, at My Popeyes Pastry Building, 3rd Floor, Nlongkak Roundabout, at the entrance to Bastos
- Saturday, 17 October 2026: a workshop at an academic institution in Yaoundé
- Saturday, 24 October 2026: a workshop at Yaoundé V City Hall, in partnership with the City Council, which is mobilizing community members, participants and staff
The partnership with Yaoundé V City Council is an important step. Local governments are close to citizens and make many decisions that affect daily life, so involving them helps make sure AI is discussed where communities and public services meet.
Part of a bigger project
These workshops are part of ACTLAB’s AI Literacy, Community Voice and Responsible AI Governance Initiative in Cameroon. The project is supported through NIYEL’s IDIA programme (Cohort 2), with support from the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), Canada, and UK International Development.
The initiative works in three Cameroonian cities, Bamenda, Douala and Yaoundé, and focuses on:
- AI literacy: helping people understand what AI is and how it works
- Ethical reflection: thinking critically about the risks and benefits of AI
- Community voice: making sure communities can share their views on how AI should be used
- AI governance: connecting local perspectives to the policies that shape AI
- Responsible AI use: practical skills for using AI tools safely and wisely
The project will end with a national consultation in Yaoundé, bringing together participants from all three cities. Their experiences and ideas will help shape a shared view of how AI can serve people in Cameroon.
Why this matters
AI should not be something that only happens to communities. It should be something they understand, question and help shape. When people know how AI works, they can use it to learn new skills, grow their businesses and access information. They can also spot misinformation, protect their data and speak up about how AI is used in their country.
This is the heart of ACTLAB’s mission: development that is inclusive, community-led and grounded in local realities. From UN conference rooms to digital centres and city halls in Cameroon, we work to make sure that the people most affected by global change have a voice in it.
The power of volunteers
This project also shows what volunteers can achieve. Christophe began his journey with ACTLAB as a UN Online Volunteer, and today he coordinates the project in Yaoundé, working with a team of volunteer facilitators. Their commitment turns a global conversation about AI into real learning in local communities.
Follow the journey
We will share photos, stories and reflections from Nkambe and from each Yaoundé workshop on our social media channels. Stay tuned for updates throughout October and for news from the national consultation.
