Every meaningful initiative reaches a moment when it steps beyond its own walls and enters the wider public conversation. For IDIA, that moment has arrived.

We are proud to share that our flagship initiative — the Initiative for the Development of Artificial Intelligence (IDIA) — has been featured in The Pilot, one of Cameroon’s respected newspapers, in its edition of Monday, 14 September 2026. Under the headline “Cameroon Talks AI: A Landmark Initiative Moves From Vision to Action,” the story reached readers on both the front page and a full feature spread inside, introducing IDIA to a national audience.

It is a milestone we mark with real gratitude – and one that captures exactly the journey this project has taken: from vision, to action, to national coverage.

From Vision to Action to National Coverage

Only weeks ago, IDIA officially moved from planning into action, marked by the project’s kick-off in Douala. Led by Action Lab for Development (ACTLAB) in partnership with the pan-African advocacy organisation Niyel, the initiative set out with a clear purpose: to ensure that ordinary citizens across Cameroon – women, youth, rural communities, and groups too often left out — have a genuine voice in how artificial intelligence is understood and governed.

IDIA is part of a wider international effort. It brings together the Artificial Intelligence for Development (AI4D) programme, Canada’s International Development Research Centre (IDRC), UK International Development, Niyel, ACTLAB, and national implementing partners to advance responsible, inclusive, rights-based, and sustainable AI for development. To see an initiative with that ambition now told in the pages of a national newspaper is more than a proud moment. It is a sign that the conversation IDIA seeks to spark is already beginning.

Because IDIA has never been only about policy or technology. It has always been about people – and about bringing as many people as possible into a conversation that will shape their future.

Why This Coverage Matters

Media coverage is not merely a matter of visibility. For an initiative built on inclusion, it is part of the mission itself.

Reaching people about artificial intelligence cannot happen through digital channels alone. Millions of Cameroonians engage with the world through newspapers, radio, and community media rather than websites and apps. Print coverage like this helps carry the conversation about AI beyond the connected few and toward the communities IDIA is designed to serve.

Every reader who learns about IDIA is a potential participant – a citizen who might join a workshop, share a perspective, or simply begin to think about what ethical, inclusive AI could mean for their own community. That is how a national conversation grows: one reader, one voice, one community at a time.

Thank You, The Pilot

We extend our sincere thanks to The Pilot for sharing IDIA’s story with its readers. Independent, local journalism plays an essential role in keeping communities informed and engaged, and in ensuring that important conversations – like the future of AI in Cameroon – reach the people they affect most.

This kind of partnership between civil society and the media is exactly the sort of collaboration IDIA hopes to encourage: a shared effort to make sure that no one is left out of the decisions shaping our digital future.

Be Part of the Conversation

IDIA is only beginning, and there is a place in it for everyone.

In the months ahead, ACTLAB will run community workshops in Bamenda, Douala, and Yaoundé, engage citizens online and over the airwaves, and work toward a national consultation – “Le Cameroun parle de l’IA” (Cameroon Talks AI) – that will carry citizens’ voices directly into the national conversation on AI governance.

Whether you are a student, an entrepreneur, an educator, a community leader, or simply someone curious about what AI means for your future, your voice matters.

From vision, to action, to national coverage – and, with your participation, to lasting change.

Because the future of AI in Cameroon will not be written by machines. It will be written by Cameroonians, together.

Action Lab for Development (ACTLAB) is a non-profit organisation promoting education, entrepreneurship, innovation, advocacy, and sustainable development. IDIA is delivered in partnership with Niyel.
